The
Oceania Masters Championships are held in alternate seasons
under the control of
Oceania Masters Athletics. Primarily a track and field
competition, there are some non-stadia events offered -
cross country, 10km road walk and half marathon.
The earlier championships were hosted with no set pattern
but now they rotate between New Zealand, Australia and the
Pacific Islands. They usually take place in the second half
of the track season when in New Zealand or Australia and
early in the season when in the Pacific Islands.
The Championships are open to entry for all members with no
qualifying performance thresholds. As with all masters
championships, there is a high level of camaraderie.
A standard programme of events has
been established by the OMA council. Of these events it is
accepted that the Steeplechase and Pole Vault may not be
held if the hosting centre does not have such facilities. A
decathlon or heptathlon may be offered as optional events and
are not mandatory.
Before the standard programme was
developed, there was some variation in events. Some events,
such as the half marathon or 60m sprint, are more recent
additions to the programme. Non-standard events previously
contested include a 10km and 16km road run, walks of 1500m,
15km and 20km and a swim-bike-run triathlon.
Those championships
known to me to have taken place on grass or gravel tracks are marked [G].
