Wellington Marathon Champs

The Wellington Marathon Champs are always held as a subset within an existing marathon event that is also open to the general public. There are two events that rotate in providing this role and this arrangement appears to be locked on as an ongoing arrangement.

In an odd-numbered year, the event is held as part of the Wellington Marathon event, organised by the Wellington Marathon Clinic. This usually takes place on the last or penultimate Sunday in June. The course is an out-and-back course from the Stadium that goes around the bays - very exposed to the wind. Since 2013, the course has incorporated a repeat loop between Scorching Bay and the Miramar cutting. However it has had a couple of glitches with both long and short courses in recent years.

In an even-numbered year, the event is historically held as part of the  Wairarapa Country Marathon, organised by Athletics Cycling Masterton. This usually takes place on the second Sunday in October. The course starts and finishes at Makoura College in Masterton with two laps around the country roads to the south. The championship struggles for quality and quantity of athletes in even years, with the proximity to the Auckland Marathon taking Wellington's better marathon runners away. In 2022 it was hosted by the Hutt Marathon.

It will next be held on 17 September 2023 as part of the Hutt Marathon.
