Teams |
| The
cross country is one of the events within the Champs that
offers something to the more traditional harrier athlete,
beyond the conventional track and field programme on which
most of the competition is based.
The distance is set at 8km but prior to
2000, a 10km course was used. From 2018, the 70+ age groups
run 6km.
It
has always been a part of the World Masters Indoor Championships
programme in 2006, wherein it is distinguished from the WMA Champs
solely by
being a winter race rather than summer, occasionally
requiring running through snow.
Records are not maintained. Every course
is different so comparisons of time between years is not
meaningful. Some courses are pretty flat while others offer
steep climbs and/or hurdles.
The first three finishers per country
within each age group count towards the teams. The team
ranking is determined by the aggregate of the three times.
Where a country does not have three entrants within an age
group, they can opt to drop up to two competitors from older
age groups down to form complete teams. This cannot be done
if a complete team already exists. The decision to do this
must be logged by team managers prior to the race
(presumably to prevent strategic DNFs by competitors).
Prior to 1991, the teams format varied
with options such as points from sum of place, team numbers
of 2 or 5 or 10, composite age grades and could differ
between grades. It was even permitted to form multiple teams
per country in the early years.
