South Island Masters
5000m

The 5000m is the longest running race in the South Island Masters Track since the 10km Road Race event was removed. The 5000m has been an Olympic event since 1912 for men and women from 1996, when women's distances were standardised to be the same as for men.

In the South Island Masters Champs, the 5000m was for many years not offered to women and considered an event for the men only. The main exceptions are the years when the Road Race was not held, when men were offered a 10000m and women the 5000m.

Since 2008, the 5000m event has been available to both genders.
